Defending champion Barcelona crushed Levski Sofia, 5-0, in the most lopsided result of the first day of the UEFA Champions League.

Despite heavy rain, Barca played superbly and was rewarded with goals from Andres Iniesta, Ludovic Giuly, Carles Puyol, Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho, who scored in stoppage time. Levski Sofia was playing its first game in the group stage of the Champions League.

Bayern Munich downed Spartak Moscow, 4-0, and Roma beat Shakhtar Donetsk, 4-0, with all the goals with both games coming in the second half.

German national team star Michael Ballack scored his first goal for Chelsea, firing home from the penalty spot in the Blues' 2-0 win over Werder Bremen,

The biggest surprise was Sporting's 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Lisbon. There was talk of the Milan club challenging for its first European Cup title in 42 years, but it hardly looked like the ''Grande Inter.'' Marco Caneira scored a stunning goal for Sporting, unleashing a dipping volley from outside the box in the 64th minute, and French star Patrick Vieira, playing in his first European game for Inter, was sent off five minutes later.

The only team to win on the road was Valencia, which got a hat trick from Fernando Morientes in its 4-2 victory at Olympiakos.
