He’s tolerated the banter all season, but now, as the English Premiership enters its final stretch, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has had enough of Jose Mourinho. If the race stays tight, you can expect the back-and-forth to get even more testy-Mourinho will throw everything he can at Ferguson and his players to try and psych them out of first place. Earlier this week, the Portuguese said Man United’s progress in the Champions League and the Premiership had been abetted by a combination of luck and controversial refereeing decisions.
“He’s been talking about referees and I think he is the last person who should talk about referees,” Ferguson retorted. “Goodness me! It’s an incredible club that. So I think he should button his lip now for good for the rest of the season. There’s plenty of talk about Chelsea and referees and Jose and referees. I have a big catalogue on it but I’ll leave that for another day.”
United currently holds a nine-point lead over second-place Chelsea, but the latter has a game in hand, and the Red Devils face a far sterner test this weekend: they travel to Anfield to play third-place Liverpool, while Chelsea travels to eighth place Portsmouth. Liverpool is unbeaten at Anfield this season; it hasn’t conceded a goal at home in its last nine matches.
