Longtime American soccer standout Fernando Clavijo has been named assistant coach for the U.S. Pro-40 Select team. Clavijo, who made 61 appearances for the U.S. national team from 1990-94, including three games during the 1994 World Cup, joins head coach Tim Hankinson in guiding the U.S. Pro-40 Select Team during its inaugural season. “Fernando is one of the premier players in U.S. soccer history. His World Cup ’94 experience will be an invaluable influence to the U.S. Pro-40 players in their quest to reach similar goals,” said Hankinson. “His coaching and commitment to the game since retiring as a player will be an added strength for Project-40’s aim to properly develop professional players.” In addition to 21 years as a professional player in Uruguay and the United States, Clavijo also coached the Continental Indoor Soccer League’s Seattle SeaDogs to a 49-41 record over three seasons, including the 1997 CISL Championship. “This is a dream come true for me after being part of the U.S. national team during World Cup ’94 and the Federation,” Clavijo said. “To work with this program and the best American soccer prospects is an experience of a lifetime. We will do what we have to do in order to bring along these young players so that they are prepared for the intensity they will face in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.”
