Incumbent Sepp Blatter defeated Issa Hayatou 139 votes to 56 to win another four-year term as FIFA president. ''I register your deep trust, your deep trust in FIFA and in me,'' said Blatter, whose opponents had accused him of financial mismanagement and corruption. ''I have to install peace in this family here and I will do it.'' Hayatou, president of the African soccer confederation, received his main support from the European faction that had led the pre-election assault on Blatter. The election was by secret ballot. After his victory, Blatter shook hands with general secretary Michel Zen-Ruffinen, who had authored a report that accused Blatter of dictatorship and corruption. Blatter later indicated that he wanted Zen-Ruffinen to resign before the World Cup, which kicks off in two days, according the EnglandÆs The Guardian. ''The people of football do not lie,'' Blatter told FIFA delegates. ''You cannot imagine what this means for me having being accused for months by a directed press what a bad man I am.''
