Former New England Revolution midfielder Andy Dorman is enjoying a solid start to life in the Scottish Premiership, having firmly established himself in the starting lineup for new club St. Mirren. Since his January arrival, the 25-year-old has bagged some crucial goals, including the winner in a 1-0 win over Dundee United that sent St. Mirren (also known as the Buddies) into the Scottish Cup quarterfinal. Dorman also stole a point in the dying minutes of a 1-1 draw against the same team last weekend.
St. Mirren manager Gus MacPherson admits that bringing in the former Revs midfielder, whom he had never seen play before in person, was a gamble: “We watched bits and pieces of him on video and DVD and liked what we saw and then we started doing our homework,” MacPherson said. “One of the first people I phoned was [then-Toronto FC coach] Mo Johnston and I also got in touch with another contact in America and both reports were positive.”
Now MacPherson believes that even Johnston underestimated Dorman’s potential. “He has been very, very good since he came in,” the St. Mirren coach said. “I think maybe Mo was concerned about recommending him to us in case he wasn’t good enough for the SPL but it’s been a while since he’s played here.”
