A French lawyer, convinced the fourth official used video evidence to have Zinedine Zidane sent-off, says the World Cup final should be replayed. “I am going to ask the judge to question all individuals concerned and to reconstruct the end of the refereeing,” Rennes-based lawyer Mehana Mouhou told Reuters on Thursday. “If it is proved that the fourth referee used video evidence, FIFA can have the final replayed.” Mouhou said he was acting on behalf of a number of clubs and associations whose names would be revealed once an application had been filed with the Tribunal de Grande Instance in Paris, France’s main civil court. It’s unclear what, if any bearing a decision in a French court would have on how FIFA, soccer’s Swiss-based world governing body, decides the matter. Zidane was sent-off after the fourth official alerted the referee assistant that Zidane had headbutted Marco Materazzi. None of the on-field match officials had seen the incident. If it turns out that the fourth official did indeed use video evidence to make his decision, it would be an illegal decision, according to FIFA’s rules. “If it is proved that video was used, I will ask for the match to be nullified,” Mouhou said.
