By far, the ugliest sequence of the transfer period has been the war of words between Chelsea Football Club and former defender William Gallas, who was transferred to Arsenal on Friday, the final day of the summer transfer period. After the defender’s departure, the club issued a lengthy statement in which it accused Gallas of threatening to score an own goal, get purposefully sent-off, or make other deliberate mistakes. Gallas then replied to Chelsea’s claims by describing the club as “lacking class.” France coach Raymond Domenech, meanwhile, has responded to the criticism surrounding his player, who is currently in a training camp ahead of tomorrow’s European Qualifying match against World Champions Italy. Domenech said the French camp was laughing about the English Champions. “William Gallas is not a traitor!” he declared. “Thinking Gallas could betray his team-mates is scandalous. I am disappointed that people could think or suppose that…It is a problem between Arsenal and Chelsea but I can say we burst out laughing with William.” Bringing the game in disrepute is a serious charge the FA could levy against a player like Gallas, but according to ESPN Soccernet, the English FA has no intention of bringing charges against Gallas, as it would be difficult to prove either way.
