Italy head into tomorrow’s semifinal clash with Germany with the best defense in the tournament and growing confidence after an impressive offensive display against the Ukraine on Friday. The Azzurri haven’t lost in 23 matches, and have only conceded a single goal at this World Cup, an own goal by Cristian Zaccardo in the 1-1 draw with the United States. Against the Australians Italy looked a little goal-shy, but the offense came together against the Ukrainelooking more like the impressive Italian side that handily beat the Germans 4-1 in a friendly match in Florence. German captain Michael Ballack said the Italians would be more daunting opposition than Argentina. “The Italians have registered an incredible unbeaten run,” he said. “They’re a worse hurdle than Argentina. Up to now, everyone has been putting Italy as favourites, and I think this is clearly the case.” The last time they met in a major tournament was the World Cup final in 1982, when the Italians ran out 3-1 victors. Italy are likely to line up in the same formation that routed the Ukraine, a 4-4-1-1 with Totti sitting in just behind striker Luca Toni. Marco Matterazzi is likely to return to his role at center back following a suspension. Alessandro Nesta is still unfit to play. Expect the Italians to be riled-up after a piece appearing in the German weekly Der Spiegel labeled the Italians as “greasy”, “parasitic”, “cheats” and “mummy’s boys.”
