Less than 4,000 fans turned out at Miami’s Orange Bowl for the final day of first-round action in the Gold Cup, but they had quite an evening of excitement. In the first game, Martinique upset Trinidad & Tobago, 1-0, to join Costa Rica from group C in the quarterfinals. The French department, which also beat the Soca Warriors at last spring’s Copa Caribe, got a second-half goal from Patrick Percin in an ugly match marred by 44 fouls. Alex Aguinaga scored in the 88th minute and again on a penalty in the third minute of stoppage time to give Ecuador a 2-0 win over defending champion Canada in the nightcap. The 2-0 win tied Ecuador with Canada and Haiti in Group D, forcing a double lottery. Canada and Haiti were drawn into first and second place to send Ecuador packing. Hernan Dario Gomez’s team is the first of the five World Cup finalists in the Gold Cup to be eliminated. In Saturday’s quarterfinals, Canada faces Martinique and Costa Rica meets Haiti. CONCACAF had not yet determined which order the matches will be played at the Orange Bowl.
