Brian McBride’s goal on a penalty kick in the 21st minute was enough to give the United States a 1-0 win over Cuba and move it into the quarterfinals of the Gold Cup. McBride’s goal, the 15th of his career, tied Earnie Stewart for fourth place on the all-time U.S. scoring list behind Eric Wynalda (34), Joe-Max Moore (24) and Bruce Murray (21). The U.S. penalty was awarded after DaMarcus Beasley, hero of the opening-game win over South Korea, was taken down in the box. Bruce Arena made four changes in his starting lineup from the first game: Pablo Mastroeni for Danny Califf, Beasley for Eddie Lewis, Cobi Jones for Manny Lagos and Josh Wolff for Jeff Cunningham. The win kept the Americans perfect in group play at the Gold Cup: 14-0-0. They face the second-place team in Group A on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 2:30 p.m. PT (live TV: CCN closed-circuit).
