The Gold Cup will move to the summer, beginning with its next edition, in 2003. Exact dates haven’t been determined. The first two Gold Cups, in 1991 and 1993, were played in the summer. Since 1996, the tournament has been played earlier in the calendar year, which has made it more difficult for teams to get their foreign-based players released. The new dates will fit into the summer window of FIFA’s standardized calendar. The USA won the last Gold Cup, CONCACAF’s national team championship, with a 2-0 final win on Feb. 2.
