Roy Wegerle scored in the 55th minute to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead over Cuba, and Eric Wynalda scored two minutes later to boost the Americans to a two-goal advantage. Two minutes before Wegerle’s strike, a Cuban blast from the top of the U.S. area had beaten Brad Friedel, but it slammed off of the crossbar. In the 55th minute, Frankie Hejduk headed a clearance to Wynalda, who deftly flicked the ball to an onrushing Wegerle. The veteran forward kept ahead of a pursuring defender until just inside the area, when he beat Reve with a driven low shot to the left corner. Just minutes later, Reve ran out to kick the ball away from an onrushing Cobi Jones, but the clearance hit the U.S. midfielder and rolled towards Wynalda outside the top of the box. The U.S. alltime leading goalscorer lofted a perfect strike past the Cuban defenders into the open net for the 2-0 lead.
