The big surprise on the U.S. roster for the Mexico-USA World Cup qualifier July 1 is the absence of Brad Friedel. Friedel was expected to start after Kasey Keller started the last three qualifiers. With Tony Meola injured, Keller’s backups will be Tom Presthus (Columbus Crew) and Nick Rimando (Miami Fusion). Three other European-based players are not on the roster: midfielders Eddie Lewis, John O’Brien, and Claudio Reyna, who is suspended for the Mexico match. Recalled were former UCLA teammates Cobi Jones and Chris Henderson. U.S. Roster Goalkeepers — Kasey Keller (Rayo Vallecano, Spain), Tom Presthus (Columbus Crew), Nick Rimando (Miami Fusion).
