Brazilian Rene Simoes, who build Jamaica into a CONCACAF power, has been named the new Trinidad & Tobago technical director after a move to bring in Trinidadian Alvin Corneal collapsed. Simoes, who coached Jamaica for six years (1994-2000), will coach Trinidad & Tobago’s U-17 team in the Under-17 World Cup in September. T&T will host the U-17 tournament. The arrival of Simoes, who replaced Nigerian Chief A.O. Onigbinde as U-17 head coach, will fuel speculation that he may replace embattled national team head coach Ian Porterfield. Simoes led Jamaica to the 1998 World Cup finals after building the Jamaican national team program from scratch. Jamaica has also qualified for the U-17 and U-20 World Cups for the first time. The Soca Warriors, who face the United States June 20 in Foxboro, Mass., opened play in the final round of World Cup qualifying with one point in three games. T&T has had all kinds of problems, including a recent incident involving stars Russell Latapy and Dwight Yorke in Edinburgh, Scotland, where Latapy was arrested in drunk-driving charges and released by Scottish club Hibs. Yorke was in Latapy’s car at the time of the arrest. Yorke, who has a reputation for enjoying the nightlife, may himself be on the way out at Manchester United.
