Costa Rican coach Alexandre Guimaraes feared an emotional letdown after the Tico’s historic win over Mexico four days earlier, but Costa Rica held off Jamaica, 2-1, to stay on the heels of the United States with 10 points at the halfway point in the Hexagonal. MLS CONNECTION: Four MLS players saw action in the Costa Rica-Jamaica game. Tyrone Marshall (Miami), Andy Williams (New England)) and Onandi Lowe (Kansas City) started for Jamaica. Lowe tied the score for the Reggae Boyz in the ninth minute. New England’s William Sunsing came on in the second half, as he has done throughout the Hexagonal, but he was so ineffective Guimaraes had to replace him. HOT NIGHT: The Costa Rica-Jamaica match was one of the most hot-tempered matches of the Hexagonal. Colombian referee John Toro Rendon handed out eight yellow cards — six to the Reggae Boyz. The game was also delayed by a short blackout. YOUNG STAR: Costa Rican defender Gilberto Martinez is one of the rising stars of the Hexagonal. Scouts from UEFA Cup runner-up Alaves were in Alajuela to watch Martinez. QUOTABLE: “We can’t be satisfied with the result because we now face the difficult task of traveling to Honduras.” (Guimaraes on the Ticos’ next match at Honduras July 1)
