What a great title from the L.A. Times: “A pair of stars, an L.A. sky, a happy Galaxy.” The paper that knows show business more than others understands exactly what David Beckham’s L.A. Galaxy deal means for he and his wife, Hollywood, and MLS. His five-year deal, worth potentially $275 million, according to various sources, has just injected “a fresh shot of celebrity into a city where it is practiced as an art.” While the rest of the world asks sports pundits and former managers and players what they think of the deal, the L.A Times asks Hollywood-and rightly so, because his move is every bit the big news for the likes of People magazine as it is for soccer in the US. Public interest in both David and Victoria Beckham is already intense. “I would say that since Princess Diana, in terms of selling newspapers, the only person who comes close is Victoria Beckham,” said Victoria Newton, an editor of London-based tabloid the Sun. “People either love her or they love to hate her, but they all love to read about her….” L.A.’s celebrity magazines already know plenty about the power couple. “It will be great for us,” said Brandy Navarre, co-owner of X17 Inc., one of L.A.’s biggest celebrity photo agencies. She’s already assigned five photographers to the Beckhams, and they won’t care either, she says, because, “You don’t come to Hollywood being as famous as they are looking to hide out and have a private life.”
