Former MLS forward Johnny Torres scored two goals as Orange County Blue Star, which plays in the fourth-division Premier Development League, held Swedish club Hammarby to a 2-2 tie Saturday in a closed-door match at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Torres, a 1997 Hermann Award winner at Creighton who played for the New England Revolution and Miami Fusion in a four-year MLS career, scored in the 13th minute and on a 30th-minute penalty kick before an audience of about 75 in the HDC's 27,000-seat stadium.
Mikael Andersson netted both goals for Hammarby, which concluded a Janaury camp in Carson. The Stockholm-based club, runner-up last year in the Swedish Allsvenskan, is owned in part by AEG, which built, owns and operates the Home Depot Center.
Andersson gave Hammarby a 1-0 lead with a fifth-minute header, then scored on a 44th-minute volley that the linesman — to strong dissent from Blue Star — ruled had entered the goal before grabbed by the goalkeeper.
Andersson also scored a goal in Hammarby's other match in California, a 3-2 loss last weekend to Mexico's under-23 team at Cal State Fullerton. Hammarby is preparing for the 2004 Allsvenskan, which begins in April.
Blue Star was missing several players, including former German star Juergen Klinsmann, who has played with the club since moving to Southern California following his professional retirement.
