By Ridge Mahoney, senior editor Add Perugia and Bayern Munich to the list of teams watching Clint Mathis. He flew to Europe to meet with officials of both teams last week after the Metros tied San Jose, 1-1, then flew back in time to report to the U.S. training camp in Cary, N.C. Several English clubs, including Newcastle and Manchester City, reportedly have him on their preliminary shopping lists, although such lists often include dozens of players. Speculation about a transfer fee may not be as important to MLS and the MetroStars as will be when a team would want him should it present an acceptable offer. It might cost the league some money to attach a contingency clause that Mathis couldn't leave until the 2002 MLS season is over. A team paying several million dollars for a new player is seldom willing to wait two months into the season for him to arrive. His contract with MLS runs until the end of the 2003 league season.
