Argentina's two most storied soccer clubs were on display Sunday in Southern California, with River Plate drubbing Mexican champion UNAM in San Diego and Boca Juniors playing CD Guadalajara even in Los Angeles.

River Plate's contentious 4-1 victory drew about 25,000 to Qualcomm Stadium. The Boca Juniors-Chivas match, packaged with a Guatemala-El Salvador duel, lured an estimated 21,000 to the Coliseum.

None of the club teams were at full strength, primarily because of Copa America. Guadalajara was missing nine regulars.

Jose Sand and Nelson Cuevas each scored a goal and set up another for River Plate, which won its 27th Argentine championship last season.

UNAM, which got its goal on Jose Ailton's 71st-minute penalty kick, lost Dario Veron to his second yellow card in second half, and Coach Hugo Sanchez was sent off in the 80th minute.

River Plate and UNAM meet again Saturday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif.

To the north, Argentine runner-up Boca Juniors tied Mexican runner-up Guadalajara, 1-1, after a horrendous error by Chivas goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera.

Fernando Camacho fired Chivas ahead in the ninth minute, a 20-yard blast off the underside of the crossbar. Six minutes later, Talavara gave the ball away in his area to Ariel Carreno, who easily finished the chance.

After the game, Guadalajara winger Ramon Ramirez confirmed he would play for Chivas USA, the MLS expansion team that is expected to announce this week that it will play at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., just a few miles south of the Coliseum.

Boca Juniors and Chivas play again Wednesday in Denver, and Boca faces Club America on Friday in San Francisco.

Guatemala beat El Salvador, 1-0, in the second game of the doubleheader, with Henry Medina heading home Guillermo Ramirez's free kick just before halftime.

The set piece, just outside the box, was awarded after former Dallas Burn midfielder Jorge Rodriguez was red-carded for tripping Zacarias Antonio. Medina ran into open space along the 6, nodding the ball toward the upper-left corner.

Referee Ricardo Valenzuela also issued seven yellow cards.

On Saturday in Chicago, Necaxa beat Mexican rival Morelia, 2-1, as Miguel Acosta and Fabian Pena scored second-half goals. The match was part of a doubleheader, with the Chicago Fire-MetroStars MLS game, played before 20,754 at Soldier Field.
