AC Milan’s Liberian forward George Weah was named the winner of the Golden Ball award for the best soccer player in Europe on Dec. 25.

He received 144 points in the voting by European soccer writers. Bayern Munich’s Juergen Klinsmann placed second with 108, while Ajax forward Jari Litmanen of Finland had 67 points.

Weah is the first non-European player to win the award, which was open to European club players of all nationalities for the first time this year.
