Reggae Boyz midfielder Steve Malcolm, 31, was killed in a car accident hours after playing in a friendly match against Bulgaria (0-0) in Kingston Sunday night. Teammate Theodore Whitmore was driving the car, which blew a tire on the way back to Montego Bay, across the island, after the game. Whitmore suffered cuts and bruises and was released later from the hospital, but Malcolm died on the spot. Malcolm, nicknamed “Shorty,” was a veteran of the national team program, having been on it before its rise in the late ’90s. He had 91 caps for Jamaica and played in the 1998 World Cup. He was a utility player, comfortable in the back or midfield. He had survived another car accident three years earlier in which Whitmore was also the driver.
