Hidetoshi Nakata, Japan’s most famous player, has decided to quit the game altogether he announced on Monday. Nakata is Japan’s most adored player, having played in three World Cups and having won a Scudetto with Roma in 2001. The midfielder became the first Japanese to play professionally in Italy, when he signed for Perugia in 1998 after the World Cup. ANSA said Nakata was particularly disappointed by Japan’s performances at the tournament. After the 0-0 draw against Croatia, Nakata reportedly wept in the locker room, saying his playing days were behind him. He’s only 29. After the announcement, Fiorentina, his current club, confirmed that their contract with the midfielder, which had a year to run, had been annulled. On his Web site, the Japan star said he decided to quit the game six months ago, but he first wanted to lead Japan to Germany 2006. Nakata played three seasons with Perugia, one with Roma, three with Parma, and one with Fiorentina, who sent him out on loan to English Premier League side Bolton Wanderers. He played 77 times for Japan, scoring 11 goals.
