Toronto FC coach Mo Johnston has stepped down from his position to move into the club’s front office. Former Leeds United manager John Carver will replace him. Rumors had been swirling about the possible move, although Johnston had denied them every time. Meanwhile, the Scot was busy trying to secure the arrival of Carver.
TFC nearly missed out on the former Leeds manager when the position at Newcastle became available last month. According to SBI’s sources, Carver would have been named an assistant to Alan Shearer had the former Newcastle striker been handed the Newcastle coaching position. The English Premier League club eventually hired Kevin Keegan instead. Carver had been an assistant to Sir Bobby Robson during his time as coach of the Magpies.
Johnston will now handle player personnel decision. SBI says the former TFC manager has one of the league’s best records for identifying and drafting young talent. Both moves were Johnston’s decision, according to the blog.
