Los Angeles Galaxy captain Dan Calichman will undergo surgery May 8 at St. Luke Hospital in Pasadena, Calif. The defender suffered a fracture of the tibia and fibula in his right leg in a collision with Colorado defender Marcelo Balboa during the opening minutes of the second half of last night’s 7-4 Galaxy win over the Rapids at the Rose Bowl. Calichman’s surgical team of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ron Kvitne and traumatologist Dr. Robert Chandler will perform an Intra-Medullary Rod Fixation procedure on the right tibia fracture. The surgery will take from one-and-a-half to two hours, and full recovery from surgery and rehabilitation is expected in four to five months. “The game was more bitter than sweet,” said Head Coach Octavio Zambrano of the club’s victory. “We lost our captain, and the impact will be felt. I am glad we won, but I am not happy. Dan is a natural leader.” The Galaxy, which will also be without MLS’s top scorer Cobi Jones as he prepares for and competes in the World Cup, will place Calichman on the injured list and will activate another player to make up the team’s 20-man roster. Fans may send their letters of encouragement to Dan at 1001 Rose Bowl Drive, Pasadena, CA 91103.
