The arrival of David Beckham means many things to the L.A. Galaxy. One of them is a new look, which was supposed to be kept under wraps until David’s arrival in Los Angeles next week. However, the new uniforms are now available for public viewing after adidas (accidentally) posted the item for sale on its Web site. Once the mistake was noticed, the apparel maker promptly pulled the item from its online store, canceling orders and asking that pictures be removed from its partner sites, but the images have since been captured and widely circulated on the Web.
Adidas confirmed that images of the new kit had been linked, but would not comment further. The Galaxy’s new look is similar to that of David Beckham’s former team Real Madrid, but with different color trim: the white jersey has a dark blue and gold trim with a newly designed crest. The away jersey is dark blue with gold, black and blue trim. Beckham was slated to unveil the new image at his introductory press conference on Wednesday at the Home Depot Center.
Sports industry analyst Marc Ganis, president of an industry consulting firm, underscored the importance of the Galaxy’s new image. “This is no less than a re-launch of the league to an entirely new audience.” Indeed, adidas, which penned a 10-year, $150 million sponsorship with MLS in 2004, expects it to become the top selling soccer jersey in the U.S., a spot currently occupied by foreign clubs’ jerseys.
