Paraguayan club Olimpia, celebrating its 100th anniversary, won its third Libertadores Cup thanks to a penalty-kick win over BrazilÆs Sao Caetano yesterday.
Olimpia, which fell 1-0 at home to the Brazilians in the first leg of the final, picked up a 2-1 win in Sao Paulo tie the series, 2-2, on aggregate and force the tiebreaker. (The Libertadores Cup does not use away goals as a tiebreaker.)
Sao Caetano, which was founded only 12 years ago, went ahead on a 31st minute goal by Ailton. Gaston Cordoba tied the game in the 48th minute and Richart Baez gave Olimpia the lead.
Olimpia prevailed, 4-2, in the penalty kick shootout. It had also relied on a PK tiebreaker to down another Brazilian club, Gremio, in the semifinals. Olimpia faces European Champions League winner Real Madrid on Dec. 3 in the Toyota Cup on Japan.
OlimpiaÆs previous Libertadores Cup titles came in 1979 and 1990.
OlimpiaÆs Argentine coach Nery Pumpido, the 1986 World Cup-winning keeper, became the sixth person to win the Libertadores Cup as a coach and player (River Plate 1986).
