English champion Chelsea continued its uncomfortable preseason with a 2-1 loss in the FA Community Shield to Liverpool. After the two-time defending champions added two more of the world’s best players to its lineup you’d be forgiven for thinking a third straight Premier League title would be a foregone conclusion for Jose Mourinho’s men. But Chelsea’s preseason form has left a lot to be desired, and that continued yesterday in Cardiff. Of course, Mourinho will shrug the game off — like each of the others — as just another meaningless friendly, and he’s right, but he must be a little worried that a team of such sparkling talent hasn’t looked much like clicking together yet. By all accounts Liverpool was the deserved winner yesterday, as England’s lanky striker Peter Crouch put the match beyond doubt with a back-post header 10 minutes from time. Liverpool will be happy to have bested the Sky Blues in yet another competition, adding their win here to victories in the Champions League and the FA Cup in the last two seasons. The Reds have pretty firmly established themselves as Chelsea’s bogey side, which in England means the team that always seems to stop the favorites, after their 11th meeting in two and a half years. One good takeaway for Chelsea from the game was a top-quality finish from $60 million signing Andriy Shevchenko. Sheva took a fantastic pass from Frank Lampard off his chest and dispatched it with his second touch past Jose Reina. No one in the stadium was more excited to see that quality finish owner Roman Abramovich who shelled out what many consider to be a shocking amount of money for a player nearly 30 years of age.
