Brazil defeated the USA 3-0 in first-round play at the U-17 World Championship in Alexandria, Egypt Sept. 8. With the loss, the U.S. U-17s cannot advance to the second round of the tournament. The U.S. fought hard and created the first scoring opportunity of the match in the sixth minute, when Brian Purcell’s sent a fine pass that put Brad Rupsis behind the Brazilian defense. It took a superb play by Brazilian defender Gaviao to keep Rupsis from getting off a clear shot on goal. The match was scoreless at halftime, thanks to the efforts of U.S. keeper Bryheem Hancock, whose fine kick-save in the 27th minute prevented a Brazil goal. U.S. midfielder Fausto Villegas had an excellent opportunity with just seconds remaining in the half, but his 10-yard went wide right. Brazil finally broke through in the 67th minute, as Jorginho penetrated the U.S. defense and dribbled into the penalty area, where he launched a shot high in to the left corner for the first goal. Brazil added a pair of late goals (by Adiel in the 87th minute and Matuzalem in stoppage time) for a 3-0 victory. “We played a good match, but Brazil’s mobility proved decisive,” said U.S. coach Jay Miller. “We had a tactical plan going into the match, and it worked for quite a while, but in the end Brazil showed why they are one of the major forces in the international game.” The U.S. will play its final match against Austria in Port Said on Sept. 11.
