Italy defender Marco Materaazzi gave his version of the head-butting incident that overshadowed Sunday’s final between France and Italy. Materazzi spent about a half hour with a FIFA disciplinary committee before walking away without commenting publicly on the matter. FIFA spokesperson John Schumacher confirmed that FIFA could not discuss Materazzi’s testimony. He was accompanied by an unidentified official from the Italian soccer federation. Yesterday FIFA said it decided to probe Materazzi’s part in the head-butting incident between himself and Zinedine Zidane after the latter claimed on French television he was repeatedly provoked during Sunday’s final by the Italy defender. Zidane said Materazzi offended each of the women in Zidane’s family. The pair were initially supposed to be queried together in front of a FIFA committee next Thursday, but Materazzi wanted to make his case now before going on vacation. Zidane will meet with officials on Thursday to discuss the incident, after which time FIFA will make a ruling. Zidane stands to lose the Golden Ball he was awarded as the tournament’s best player if a FIFA committee deems his offense to be serious enough. In an interview on Canal Plus, Zidane apologized for his act but said he didn’t regret it because of what was said. Since the interview, French and world opinion seems to have swing behind Zidane.
