Brazilian keeper Dida saved a penalty from Portugal’s Jose Calado in the 61st minute.
Calado had been fouled in the box by Ze Maria, when the Brazilian defender pushed him in the back during an attempted header.
Dida dove to his lower left and knocked the spot-kick against the post and to safety.
Brazil’s Flavio Conceicao appeared to have scored less than a minute later, but he was ruled offside.
