North Carolina (19-4-0) faces Stanford (19-1-1) Friday in the semifinals of the Men’s College Cup in Columbus, Ohio. Here’s look at the key players in the Stanford-North Carolina matchup (kickoff: Friday, Dec. 14, 5 pm; TV: delayed, Saturday, Dec. 15, 11 am). STANFORD: Morrison and Levesque lead Cardinal Senior LEE MORRISON and junior ROGER LEVESQUE were both selected to the 2001 NSCAA/adidas All-America teams. Morrison was named to the first team, while Levesque earned second-team honors. Morrison’s selection is the second of his career; he earned second-team status in 2000. He became the all-time Cardinal leader in consecutive games started and games played (87) in the quarterfinal victory against Saint Louis. Levesque was the second consecutive Cardinal to be named Pac-10 Player of the Year, earning the 2001 honor. He has three goals in two tournament games after missing the second-round match against Santa Clara due to a red card he received in the regular-season finale. With Levesque unavailable against Santa Clara, Coach Bret Simon turned to freshman MATT JANUSZ, who responded with his first hat trick. Janusz followed that stellar performance up with a one-goal, one-assist effort in Stanford’s 3-1 third round victory against Portland. Levesque and Morrison earned all-Pac-10 honors along with defender TODD DUNIVANT and midfielder DEREK SHANAHAN. Junior JOHANES MALIZA has emerged as a team leader and offensive threat. He has tallied either a goal or an assist in seven of the last nine games. Junior keeper ANDREW TERRIS has stepped in for graduated Adam Zapala in goal and recorded 11 shutouts. He has limited opponents to a 0.52 GAA. NORTH CAROLINA: Jackson anchors Heels’ defense Englishman DANNY JACKSON was a first-team all-America defender and a first-team all-ACC choice for the second consecutive year. RYAN KNEIPPER scored two goals in under five minutes in the second half in the Heels’ 3-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in three overtimes. The second-team all-ACC pick leads UNC with 13 goals and 32 points. Seniors CHRIS LEITCH, (second-team all-ACC) and NOZ YAMAUCHI (former U.S. U-17) have each played in 86 games at Carolina, tying the school record. Midfielder LOGAN PAUSE, the Teels’ third second-team all-ACC selection, was expected to miss the entire 2001 season after undergoing knee surgery in the summer but returned less than halfway through the season. He scored the game-winner against Duke, N.C. State and Clemson. Forward MARCUS STOREY was named the ACC Rookie of the Year. He’s third on the team with nine goals and second with eight assists for 26 points. Defender DAVID STOKES, a sophomore, is one of the most highly rated young collegians. The 6-foot-2 Virginian been called up to the U.S. under-23 national team camp in January. MICHAEL UELTSCHEY had shutouts in Carolina’s first two tournament games to give him 12.6 shutouts this season and 29.1 for his career, both school records.
