C. Celestine Babayaro scored for Nigeria in the 27th minute to tie the game at one apiece.
Nwankwo Kanu received a short corner from Obaraku, and lofted a cross to the far post that Babayaro nailed with a leaping header from eight yards. The shot bounced off the inside of the far post and into the net.
Nigeria was unfortunate not to have scored a minute earlier, when Daniel Amokachi beat two defenders and hit a solid ten-yard shot past the Argentine keeper, Cavallero, that ricochetted off the near post.
