The Copa Merconorte game scheduled for Wednesday night between the MetroStars and MexicoÆs Chivas of Guadalajara at Giants Stadium has been canceled, after Chivas players and coaches informed the MetroStars they would not travel to the New York area to play. Guadalajara officials said they wanted to postpone the match because they feared another terrorist attack on New York. (Although Guadalajara coach Oscar Ruggeri admitted that his team’s weekend game against archrival Club America has something to do with the decision. He told Reuters, “It’s complicated going to the United States and in any case, I’ve told the directors that we don’t want games before the ‘clasico.'”) The date of this match has already been changed twice. Originally scheduled for Wednesday, it was moved to Nov. 8 — with the approval of Guadalajara — to accommodate the third game of the MLS semifinals should the Metros advance that far. Several weeks ago Guadalajara cited a conflict with the Nov. 8 date and requested a change. Once the Metros were eliminated by Los Angeles, the original date was reinstated. According to MetroStars general manager Nick Sakiewicz, “If they don’t show up, we win 2-0 and they have to pay a $25,000 fine.” A 2-0 forfeit victory in would put the MetroStars in a tie atop Group B with Colombia’s Millonarios, which is scheduled to play the MetroStars Oct. 31 at Giants Stadium at 8 p.m. ET. “This is an incredibly unfortunate decision by Chivas,” said Sakiewicz. “Not only do we find their fears unfounded, but we also find them a bit dubious, in light of their key Mexican League game coming up this weekend [against Mexican club America]. It’s even more unfortunate that Chivas has now disappointed the sizable Mexican fan base in our area.”
