It will be former NASL player Javier Aguirre’s job to lead Mexico back from the depths of the Hexagonal, beginning with a match against the United States July 1 in Mexico City. Aguirre was named Mexico’s new national team coach after Wednesday’s resignation of Enrique Meza following Mexico’s 3-1 loss to Honduras that left it fifth in the Hexagonal at the halfway mark. “I understand the difficult moment of the national team,” says Aguirre, “I’m as convinced as anyone that we are good enough to qualify.” Aguirre, a former Mexican national team player who played for the Los Angeles Aztecs in 1980, was Miguel Mejia Baron’s assistant for the 1994 World Cup and led Pachuca to the 1999 Torneo Invierno title and second place in the 2001 Torneo Verano.
