The USA-Mexico friendly to be played at the Los Angeles Coliseum next Wednesday (Oct. 25) will feature two teams, not one, shorn of many stars. U.S. coach Bruce Arena has called up a team heavily laden with MLS players and devoid of those based in Europe, with the exception of teenager Landon Donovan. Also out are Eddie Pope (back injury) and Cobi Jones (fatigue). Chris Armas, who plays for Chicago Saturday in the U.S. Open Cup final, might be a late scratch due to fatigue. Mexico coach Enrique Meza is also shorthanded: Players from Guadalajara (Chivas) are not available due to their team’s second leg, semifinal match against Atletico Nacional in the Merconorte Cup, and Atlante plays Cruz Azul in the Pre-Libertadores Cup. Both games are scheduled for Wednesday. So for Mexico, there’s no Jorge Campos, Claudio Suarez, Ramon Ramirez, Francisco Palencia, Emilio Mora, Manuel Abundis or Luis Hernandez. None of those names were on the roster submitted Friday. Meza has called up midfielder Victor Ruiz, who scored the only goal of a 1-0 win over Bolivia in late September, and striker Jared Borguetti, who scored twice in Mexico’s 7-0 romp over Trinidad & Tobago Oct. 7 in a World Cup qualifier. Borguetti also leads the Mexican League in scoring with 13 goals. National team veterans Pavel Pardo, Duilo Davino, Daniel Osorno and Miguel Zepeda are also on the 18-man roster, which could change depending on what happens in Mexican League games this weekend. The U.S. team is training at the ARCO Olympic facility in Chula Vista, located near San Diego. It scrimmages the L.A. Galaxy Friday at 4 p.m. This is the Mexican roster submitted Friday: GK — Adrian Martinez (Santos), Erubey Cabuto (Atlas). D — Pavel Pardo (Club America), Omar Blanco (Toluca), Sergio Almaguer (Necaxa), Gilberto Adame (Tecos), Duilio Davino (Club America), Joaquin Beltran (UNAM). MF — German Villa (Club America), Victor Ruiz (Toluca), Ramon Morales (Morelia), Juan Pablo Rodriguez (Atlas), Johan Rodriguez (Santos), Javier Lozano (Morelia). F — Jared Borguetti (Santos), Daniel Osorno (Atlas), Miguel Zepeda (Atlas), Jesus Olalde (Tigres).
