Javier Aguirre replaced Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson as Mexico coach with one simple objective: qualify for the World Cup. Aguirre has turned around a sputtering team in only a few months. But the success doesn’t appear to come from any secret methodology.
Mexico winger Andres Guardado says that the players simply respect Aguirre’s personality and honesty. “We all know the type of personality that Aguirre has we all know his ways of working because he transmits it perfectly to us. It’s his fierceness and character. He mentioned when he got here that he wanted 11 warriors inside the field and I think we’re getting there,” Guardado told Mediotiempo.com.
Guardado praised Aguirre for his motivating ability: “We are attacking the way he wants us to because it is obviously an important factor. He is someone you have in front and that always transmits that you are better than your rival and that quality exists. Everything we do on the field is reflected back to him.” Mexico has taken a more aggressive attitude under Aguirre. “We have to take the game against Costa Rica seriously,” said Guardado. “We can’t belittle ourselves because of our past away games in the qualifiers. Now we will go there and show everyone that we can also win away from home.”
