With the CONCACAF Champions League back in action after a four-month break, SI.com’s Luis Bueno takes a look at why he feels “Mexico is still king” while MLS’s “stumbles continue” as teams are set to play the second leg of the home-and-away series this week, starting with the Houston Dynamo traveling to meet Atlante Tuesday night.

Despite Santos Laguna falling 2-0 in Montreal to the USL’s Impact in the first leg, Bueno writes that “the Mexican league still sets the standard in CONCACAF,” adding that “until foreign clubs regularly leave Mexico with victories, the Mexican league is still superior in the region.”

As for MLS and its mediocre results in the tournament, Bueno points out that since the competition has become a two-leg series, “MLS has been overmatched. At home, MLS teams have held their own, but on the road — and particularly in Mexico — they’ve fallen flat on their faces.”
