MLS: 'El Diablo' to serve D.C. United in various roles

D.C. United has retained its former playmaker Marco ''El Diablo'' Etcheverry to serve as Special Consultant to the President.

Etcheverry, whom Soccer America named the league's all-time best player, won three MLS titles with D.C. United (1996, 97 and 99).

In his new role, Etcheverry will scout, serve as a liaison to Latin American countries and work as an ambassador for D.C. United domestically and internationally. He will also work closely with D.C. United Director of Youth Development John Maessner in providing training and technical support for United's youth teams and academy programs.

''Marco is arguably the greatest player to ever grace Major League Soccer,'' said United President and CEO Kevin Payne. ''He led us to unprecedented success and international respect. We are excited to continue this relationship, as Marco's passion and knowledge will be of great assistance to our on-going initiatives on and off of the field.''
