A tremendous Carlos Ruiz header pushed the MLS All-Stars ahead and DaMarcus Beasley added a stunning goal from the most acute of angles as the U.S. league's top players outlasted Mexico's Guadalajara, 3-1, Saturday in the MLS's eighth All-Star Game.

Ante Razov also tallied for the All-Stars, who weathered early pressure from their guests before taking control of the match when midfielders Chris Armas and Landon Donovan took the field in the second half.

An announced crowd of 27,000, more than half cheering for Guadalajara (and a sizable portion in the Chivas' trademark red-and-white-striped jersey), watched at the Home Depot Center near Los Angeles.

Ruiz, whose goal restored an All-Stars' lead that had been lost a few moments earlier, was voted the game's MVP.

All-Stars coach Bob Bradley, of the MetroStars, played every player on his roster except Chicago Fire goalkeeper Zach Thornton.

The Chivas had more of the match in the first half, but MLS goalkeeper Kevin Hartman, Ruiz's Galaxy teammate, came up big to stop Rafael Medina on a breakaway in the 10th minute and tipped Jair Garcia's header over the crossbar in the 26th.

The All-Stars also played strong defensively, especially Chicago Fire defender Carlos Bocanegra, one of six Southern Californians on the MLS roster.

The addition of Chicago Fire veteran Armas and San Jose Earthquakes star Donovan at halftime enabled the Americans to keep better possession, and it paid off with the first goal, by Chicago's Razov, in the 57th minute.

Mauricio Cienfuegos (Galaxy) tried to play a ball through maze of Guadalajara players on the left flank, but one of the defenders got a piece of the ball, slowing it down. That enabled Donovan, with a quick burst of speed, to run onto the ball and take it alone into the box. He drew goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez off his line, the played the ball to the right for Razov, who first-timed it home.

Jair Garcia, the Chivas' most dangerous attacking player after Ramon Ramirez departed in the 28th minute with an ankle injury, evened the score in the 66th.

Manuel Sol's cross from deep on the right flank lured Hartman to the edge of his box, but the keeper had no chance to beat Garcia to the ball. The Chivas forward poked the ball past Hartman with one touch and fired into an empty net with the next touch.

Ruiz scored his goal in the 68th, rising above two defenders near the spot to nod a fine cross from Bocanegra over Sanchez and into the left side of the net.

Beasley scored in the 83rd following an odd sequence. After beating Sanchez on the dribble, he knocked the ball into the goalmouth from just left of the goal. A defender knocked it back toward Beasley, who — while falling onto his behind — got his foot on ball.

Beasley was looking for Donovan, but the ball slowly rolled, at a tight angle, beyond the near post and over the goal line.
