Mexican national team goalkeeper Jorge Campos is returning to Mexico to play for his off-season club team UNAM Pumas. Campos will leave immediately and will not appear in the playoffs for the Chicago Fire. Campos, whom Chicago acquired from the Los Angeles Galaxy, missed much of the first half of the MLS season due to commitments with UNAM and the Mexican national team for the World Cup. In all, he was available to the Fire for 14 games, playing nine. He finished the regular season with a 4-3 record with a 1.89 goals against average, but could not unseat Zach Thornton (16-8, with a league-best 1.17 GAA) as the team’s starting keeper. “We’ve been fortunate to have two excellent keepers throughout the last half of the season,” said Fire coach Bob Bradley. “We appreciate and respect everything Jorge has done for the Chicago Fire, but we feel Zach has earned a starting role entering the playoffs. Pumas expressed the desire for Jorge to join their team immediately and Jorge felt that this was the best solution. We all wish him the best.” MLS Deputy Commissioner Sunil Gulati stressed in a teleconference today that Campos is under contract to MLS for the 1999 season. However, it is not yet known whether he will return to the Fire or play for another MLS team. Chicago has called up keeper Dusty Hudock from the A-League’s Seattle Sounders to serve as Thornton’s backup. Hudock, who played for Colorado in the inaugural MLS season, was the A-League’s Goalkeeper of the Year in 1997. Chicago opens its series with Colorado on Oct. 1 at Soldier Field.
