The Kansas City Wizards and MLS have announced the signing of Canadian forward Alex Bunbury. Bunbury fills Kansas City’s fourth and final foreign spot, left vacated with the release of Refik Sabanadzovic, and brings the number of the Wizards roster to 23, including injured and Project-40 players. “We are looking forward to incorporating Alex Bunbury to our team. He is an excellent complement to the squad we already have and will do extremely well in the system we use,” said Wizards’ coach Bob Gansler. “What makes him exceptional is how he creates things on his own with his athleticism, but also is a good combination player, making his teammates better.” Bunbury, who will turn 32 on June 16, was born in Plaisance, Guyana, but his hometown is Montreal, Canada. He has 65 appearances for Canada and is the third for his country in career international goals with 17. He has played with FC Maritimo of the Portuguese First Division since 1993, and has scored 59 goals in 165 games, making him their all-time leading scorer and leading the club to two UEFA Cup qualifications. Last season, the strong and speedy striker finished tied for fifth in the Portuguese First Division with 15 goals and led Maritimo in every offensive category. “Everywhere Alex has gone, he has achieved success,” said Wizards GM Doug Newman. “He has always made his teams better and we look forward for him to contribute the same here. One tremendous attribute is the way he adapts to the game of soccer. In Canada, they play a very direct and physical style, while in Portugal the players have great finesse. Alex has proven that he can excel under both styles.” Bunbury is expected to join the Wizards early next week and could make his MLS debut against D.C. United on June 26. “Playing in the MLS will provide a great challenge for me, but a tremendous opportunity for me and my family to be in the United States and part of the Wizards family,” Bunbury said. “I promise to my teammates, coaches and the fans that I will always give 100% on and off the field. When I do, I will be successful and hope to help the progress of building the Wizards into an established force in the MLS.”
