The San Jose Clash has acquired midfielder Shawn Medved from D.C. United, the team announced Jan. 22.
In exchange for Medved, who scored a dramatic, 82nd-minute equalizer to force overtime in MLS Cup ’96, San Jose agreed to switch positions with D.C. United in the second round of the MLS Supplemental Draft. San Jose gives the No. 14 pick to D.C., and draft in United’s spot, No. 20.
This is the second trade the Clash has made this month, as San Jose also acquired midfielder Dominic Kinnear from Colorado.
Clash coach Laurie Calloway feels that the San Jose midfield has been improved “dramatically” and feels that Medved will have an immediate impact on the Clash offense.
“Shawn Medved is the kind of direct player who can take on defenders and take pressure away from his teammates,” Calloway said. “He’s a proven scorer, and he should be a great addition to our team.”
Medved, 29, was chosen by D.C. United in the second round of the inaugural MLS draft. He played in 27 regular-season games, started 13, and scored three goals.
“This is another step toward meeting our offseason objective of improving our midfield,” said Clash GM Peter Bridgwater. “And we’re not done yet. We’re still hoping to make another trade or two, and the league is working on our behalf to sign a forward from the Mexican First Division, someone we can pair up front with Eric Wynalda, someone who can score us a lot of goals.”
