Completing a Major League Soccer trade made in July, the San Jose Clash has acquired the Tampa Bay Mutiny’s first-round selection in the 2000 MLS Supplemental Draft The acquisition of the draft pick completes the July 19 trade in which the Clash acquired forward Alejandro Sequeira in exchange for forward Raul Diaz Arce. “Getting an extra first-round pick in next year’s draft is significant because the league is strongly considering doing away with separate college and supplemental drafts in favor of a single ‘Super Draft,'” Clash GM Lynne Meterparel said. “College players, A-League and indoor players who normally would be in the supplemental draft, Project-40 players and any other unassigned players under MLS contract would be available in the ‘Super Draft,’ so it will be advantageous to have as many picks as possible,” added Clash Director of Soccer Renato Capobianco. In other news, San Jose goalkeeper David Kramer, sidelined by a shoulder injury for much of the 1999 season, will undergo surgery and will miss the remainder of the season. Kramer, 27, had a 5-3 record and a 2.13 goals-against average in 1999. Kramer is suffering from a torn left labrum, the stabilizing mechanism in the shoulder. He is scheduled to undergo surgery Aug. 19. The operation will be performed by Clash orthopedist Dr. Arthur Ting. The sixth-leading goalkeeper in MLS history in both minutes played (5,531) and saves (253), Kramer also ranks 10th in victories (28). He owns the second-longest shutout streak in league history, having gone 398 minutes without allowing a goal in a streak that started in September 1998 and ended in the second half of the 1999 opener. Rookie goalkeeper Joe Cannon, who split time with Kramer early in the season has started the past eight games for the Clash. He is being backed up by A-League call-up J.J. Wozniak of the San Francisco Bay Seals.
