The San Jose Clash re-signed four players Jan. 12. Versatile performer Lawrence Lozzano will return to San Jose in 1998. Last season he became just the fourth MLS player to record double figure marks in goals (12) and assists (11). Veteran defenders Troy Dayak and Oscar Draguicevich will also return, as will last year’s project-40 allocation Esmundo Rodriguez. The Clash was winless in games that Dayak did not both start and finish last season. Rodriguez, who was a starter on the U.S. U-20 team at the World Youth Championship in Malaysia last summer, spent the offseason training with Mexican First Division club Atlas. “The league is finalizing contracts with several of our other players,” said Clash GM Peter Bridgwater, who added that negotiations with Salvadoran forward Ronald Cerritos, the team’s leading scorer last season, could be completed “as early as this week.”
