The San Jose Clash has received 20-year-old midfielder Esmundo Rodriguez as its Project-40 player. Rodriguez, who spent 18 months with Mexican club Monterrey and also competed with the U-20 national team at Malaysia ’97, is expected to be in uniform when the Clash hosts Columbus Aug. 9. “Esmundo has a great future, both nationally and internationally,” said Clash head coach Brian Quinn. “He’s the kind of player who can help you on both offense and defense, and he’s going to improve every year.” Project-40 players are considered the 21st players on their teams roster. They compete for playing time with members of their MLS team’s active roster, but they are also eligible to play for an A-League or USISL affiliate.
