Columbus Crew defender Mike Lapper will miss the remainder of the 1998 season after tearing his left ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in the final moments of the Crew’s 2-0 loss at Miami on May 9. Lapper landed awkwardly on his left leg with just about five minutes remaining in the game on Saturday but stayed in the game. The injury was initially thought to be just a sprain. He will have surgery in 10 days to two weeks. Forward Stern John, who dislocated his right elbow in the first half of the same match, will have an MRI done today. John is out a minimum two to four weeks, pending further evaluation from the results of his MRI. Columbus, which hosts the unbeaten Los Angeles Galaxy May 17, will also be without Thomas Dooley, Brian Maisonneuve, Brian McBride and Juergen Sommer, all of whom are training with the U.S. national team in preparation for France ’98.
