The Dallas Burn has announced the signing of Colombian forward John Jairo Trellez. Trellez, who has three goals in 24 appearances with the Colombian national team, trained with the Burn in preseason in France, scoring two goals in two games. Because MLS teams may only carry four foreigners on their rosters, the Burn waived forward Mickey Trotman, a Trinidad & Tobago native, to make room for Trellez. “We had a chance to see Trellez in France and he showed that he’s a proven goalscorer that, with time to regain his fitness, will be a significant addition to our offense,” said Burn coach Dave Dir. “It’s a shame that we can only have four foreigners on the roster and that we had to let Mickey go, but I believe that he has a great future.” Trellez, a native of Medellin, Colombia, most recently played with Boca Juniors of the Argentine First Division in 1998. He also played for Boca from 1994-95. Trellez began his soccer career as a member of Atletico Nacional of Medellin’s youth program. He played with Nacional from 1985-89 and was teammates with Burn midfielder Leonel Alvarez on the side that won the Libertadores Cup in 1989. From 1989-90, Trellez played with Zurich in Switzerland before returning to Nacional from 1991-94, with the team winning the Colombian title in 1991. He also played with Juventude of Brazil in 1995 and with Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia in 1997, winning the 1997 Saudi Arabian Championship. In his 11 years with Nacional, Trellez has scored 116 goals. “I’m very excited to join the Burn and Major League Soccer,” said Trellez. “I had the opportunity to train with the team in preseason and was very comfortable with my teammates and feel that this is a team that can go very far.” Trellez, who turns 31 on April 29, is expected to arrive in Dallas on the evening of April 21 and should train with the Burn the following day. Dallas is set to host the Columbus Crew on April 24.
