D.C. United beat Tottenham, 1-0, in a benefit game in London.
Guest player Wade Barrett's goal in the 85th minute gave United the victory. It was the first gamer between an MLS team and English Premier League team in England.
''Tonight was a great advertisement for Major League Soccer,'' said United coach Ray Hudson. ''We played attractive, attacking soccer in a big-time atmosphere against a first-class opponent and got a deserved result.''
American keeper Kasey Keller started for Tottenham, which also used former stars such as Paul Gascoigne, Juergen Klinsmann, Chris Waddle and David Ginola.
