Two-time defending MLS champion D.C. United will make the first appearance in Africa by an MLS club when it travels to Cairo to face Egyptian club Al-Ahly on May 5. The match will launch an Egyptian-American festival designed to attract U.S. tourists to Egypt and will be played at 12:30 p.m. (U.S. eastern time) in the 100,000 seat National Stadium in Cairo. Al-Ahly is one of the top Egyptian clubs, having won 26 Egyptian championships, including the last four. It features seven players who were part of the Egyptian national squad that won the African Nations Cup in February, including Hossam Hassan, who tied for top scoring honors in the competition. “It’s quite an honor to be asked to play this match against a club such as Al-Ahly,” said D.C. United GM Kevin Payne. “We look forward to representing U.S. professional soccer in a match that will surely draw great interest in Africa and the Middle East.”
