D.C. United wrapped up its Asian tour March 9 with a 7-1 demolition of Hong Kong league champion Instant Dict at the Hong Kong Stadium.

Jaime Moreno led the way for D.C., scoring a hat trick and causing an own goal in just 57 minutes of work. Steve Rammel added two strikes, and Tony Sanneh also scored for United.

“We had a good week of training here in Hong Kong, and with the addition of three of our national team players [Jeff Agoos, Eddie Pope, and Tony Sanneh; John Harkes remained in the U.S.], we were able to do some things we weren’t able to do against Grampus Eight in Tokyo,” said United coach Bruce Arena. “”Overall we played pretty well. A lot of it had to do with our fitness level improving over the last week. We’re beginning to play as a team, you can see that, but we still need to get better.”

D.C. United dominated the game from the beginning, with Instant Dict keeper Leonard having to make a fine save to deny Moreno in the first few minutes.

But in the 7th minute, Leonard was out of position when D.C. midfielder Joey Thiemann’s shot was deflected, and Moreno poked the ball home from three yards out. The Bolivian speedster struck again in the 36th minute, taking a pass from Agoos and dribbling Leonard out of the play before shooting successfully to the far post.

Instant Dict struck back two minutes from the half through forward James Muir, who headed home from a cross by Hoi tai Chon to make it 2-1.

After the intermission, there was no stopping D.C. In the 50th minute. Marco Etcheverry’s through ball found Richie Williams, who dumped a short pass off to Moreno, who completed his hat trick from seven yards out.

Two minutes later it was 4-1, as Moreno’s hard cross deflected off of an Instant Dict defender and into the goal.

Rammel came on for Moreno shortly afterward, and he struck in the 73rd minute when he took a fine ball from Etcheverry and beat his defender enough to fire an eight-yard shot to the far post. Eleven minutes he scored again on a similar play, with Richie Williams collecting the assist.

Tony Sanneh wrapped up the scoring two minutes from time. Leonard did well to save John Maessner’s 18-yard shot, but Sanneh pounced on the rebound to score from four yards.

D.C. returns to Washington March 10 and will resume practicing on March 13. The club heads to Florida March 16 for a final week of training before opening the season in Los Angeles March 29.
